Helping out Typhoon Yolanda victims
Knowing that you are helping to create a peaceful world and a safer planet is only a fraction of the pride that a volunteer should feel every time they lend a helping hand.
To volunteer--is to contribute your goodness and works to humanity unselfishly, without seeking any rewards.
A week after the onslaught of a powerful typhoon, twelve mighty Road Eaters (Josh, Kirk, Jemai, Arjay, Jeff, Marvin, JL, Ray, Mico, Emille, Jane, and Winsor) devoted time and effort to undertake some tasks at the Department of Social Welfare and Development's Relief Operations Hub in Pasay City.
What they did was just a little way to help out fellow Filipinos in the affected areas of Super Typhoon Yolanda.
At 2:00 PM they had their meeting place at Alpha Land Mall near MRT Magallanes Station. Then, by the use of JL's vehicle, they drove their way without knowing the exact location of the hub. They only knew that it was at the back of NAIA Terminal 2. But the club got there easily because during that time, it was noticeable; army trucks with goods were going in and out of that place.
Upon arriving at 4:00 PM, the club registered first, and then left some goods that they have brought with them. The area was very busy. It was a big warehouse full of army and navy people with other civilians.
While waiting to be oriented, a DSWD personnel asked if someone could distribute biscuits to the new volunteers in the orientation area. Kirk pleasurably did the job.
A couple of minutes after, someone came and asked for volunteers who could distribute drinking water to all people all over the area. The club stood up immediately to volunteer. They delivered gallons and cups to everyone and all thirsty volunteers were hydrated that afternoon.
They went back to the orientation area. The club's arrival was just in time to complete the number of volunteers for batch orientation.
After the orientation, the DSWD personnel asked if someone could replace her to orient the next batches of volunteers. Josh conducted the proceeding orientations.
The rest of the gang were deployed to repack and lift sacks of rice. Marvin and Emille were assigned to do the inventory checking of all the goods going out of the warehouse.
The great work ended at 8:00 PM. They bid goodbye to their fellow volunteers and DSWD personnel. And of course… they had a photo opportunity with the Army with all the goods they repacked in the background.

It might have been a long and tiring day… It might be a long ride back home… but it was yet another fulfilling experience for each of the volunteers from the Road Eaters Running Club.

The North Face 100 Trail Run 2013
Intense. That's how the heat can be described when summer is already in the Philippines. This period is the peak of the sun's intensive heat.
Fortunately for the runners, the much anticipated The North Face 100 Trail Run was held in the Summer Capital of the Philippines where heat was not too much to bear.
Of course, months before this run, the Road Eaters were already eyeing for their involvement in this extreme adventure.
Experiencing the 10 MOST out of TNF 100 Trail Run
A Road Eater's Perspective
(in random order)
1. THE MOST EXPENSIVE RUN - considering the cost of the travel fare, hotel fees, foods and souvenirs.
2. IT'S THEIR FIRST 50K RUN - strong and determined Road Eaters were eager to get out of their comfort zones and test their abilities to face unfamiliar challenges. Some succeeded but we congratulate all 50K runners!
3. THE FIRST TRAIL RUN - an exciting journey that let the Road Eaters soar the heights of the mountains, so close to the energy-giving pine trees with a bonus magnificent scenery.
4. RERC WAS THE MOST PARTNERED CLUB - remembering the moments with the Ultra Snail Brotherhood, Brooks Running Consultants and the Team Tukod.
5. THEY HAD THE MOST NUMBER OF EATING SESSIONS - of course, as expected!
a. First breakfast at McDonald's (that means there's a second breakfast, a third, a fourth, a fifth...) just kidding!
b. Lunch at Cafe at the Ruins
c. Ice Cream and Taho Strawberry for snacks
d. Other undocumented eating sessions while inside the van, hotel, and other places of attractions during their 4-day out-of-town adventure
7. THE MOST DANGEROUS RUN - given the steep ups and downs of the path, big rocks and the insanely narrow mountain sides. One incorrect step and you might fall into the abyss of nothingness.
8. THE MOST PAINFUL RUN - it's the worst self-inflicted punishment in a totally peaceful and refreshing environment. Runners would do everything, either to finish the race before the cut-off period or to remain alive and avoid the pitfalls.
Arjay seemed he really enjoyed the run!
9. IT'S THEIR LONGEST OUT-OF-TOWN TRAVEL - the Road Eaters started their journey on a Friday and went back to the metropolis on a Monday.
10. THEY HAD THE MOST NUMBER OF EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES - during their 4-day stay in Baguio, they were taking their turns in running for the marathon, strolling, sight-seeing, half a day of taking photos, eating, and/or sleeping for recovery.
Here's what they've got after the marathon: A beautifully-engraved medallion!

Re-united at last...

Terrific Subic Day 1
Leisure. Panoramic views. Cool breeze. The Road Eaters were surely excited to start the year because January 2013 was the running club’s FIRST OUT-OF-TOWN adventure! They were not just into running… they were also into something! BEACHES! Yes! Just pronounce it with a long ‘ee’ pleeeeeaase.
In the morning of January 26th, all fourteen Road Eaters who signed up for the Subic International Marathon 2013 were present and had their first stop at Starbucks somewhere in Quezon City and their first carbo-loading at Jollibee. The group was divided into two. Van A was loaded with happy children while Van B with some serious stuffs that made NLEX reeeeaaally long like it’s not gonna end. Only Saldy of Van B tried to break the silence by disturbing Jemai’s sleep.
At last, when they reached Subic, two rooms were already reserved for their occupancy at Ocean View Beach Resort Hotel. Great scenery. Loved the ambiance.
They visited Harbor Point. Eating was one of the signature moves of the club (that’s why they were called Road Eaters). However, they couldn't really make it fast at Pepper Lunch because the meals were exaggeratedly topped with pepper! No wonder why Kevin didn't enjoy his meal. Maybe if there was a prize…
They shopped at Puregold and the club sponsored bottles of Gatorade and Snickers! When they came back to the hotel, there was no electricity.Unpaid bills? Hahaha! No, it was just common in that place. Not so sure if the whole city was affected. They decided to go swimming when the lights went on. The happiest part -- they hit the beach! It was like an early summer vacation. The boys formed their own Frisbee team. The girls could have become the cheer dancers. And Josh was busy taking photos.
Being buried under the sand was never relaxing. Why? Because of THAT multipurpose Frisbee that kept on flying on top of her!

It’s January but it’s HOT!
Literally. No kidding.
Welcome to the place called Subic.

Later on, she became an instant sand mermaid.
Engraved on her sandy scales was the name of the
MOST HILARIOUS RUNNING CLUB IN THE PHILIPPINES.
Dusk. But the fun continued.
Boys again.
Where were the girls?
Ah, there. Lovely.
Another eating spree for dinner! Because it had to be fast, some of them accidentally ate half-cooked hotdogs! Some parts were still frozen.
Pretty pout, Saldy.
They didn't just do running and eating exercises. They had some mental exercises too a little less than 10 hours before the run the next day. If only those cards were real money and property…-------------------------------------------------------

One of the most awaited part: Time to Eat, Road EATERS!
While waiting for the others to come, videos were shown to present the activities done in the past marathons in the year 2012. Courtesy of Josh.
Of course, what would make the party even more fun? Games!!!
1. Who’s the Cat – the blindfolded must guess who among the participants was the cat. The “cat” was free to manipulate the sound his/her miyaw.
2. Animal Sounds – all blindfolded contestants must find their partners using their agreed upon animal sounds. They had to turn around (and become dizzy!) to make their partners harder to find. The first one to find his/her “animal” partner wins. This game incredibly produced a farm and a jungle at the venue.
3. Build Your Marshmallow Castle – groups of three must build the tallest and strongest marshmallow castle using toothpicks. After building the castle, all marshmallows used must be eaten. The fastest group to gobble them up wins.
After the games, the much awaited gift-giving was done.
Oh by the way, there were exchange gifts NO-NO’s:
A. picture frame/album
B. towel/panyo
C. wall clock
D. flower vase
E. plato/baso/tasa
F. sabon
G. kandila
H. wine
I. cash/alkansya/Gift Cheque
J. cellphone load
So most gifts given were runner’s items. Easy!

Happiness didn’t end at True Deli Café. While others needed to go home, some others wanted to cherish the remaining moments before they parted their ways. Carol, Arjay, Josh, Kirk, BJ, Lyvia, and Hanna went to Giligan’s at Trinoma!
Time flew so fast and in just a matter of days, it would be year 2013. At some point of their lives, these children of God met. There are no coincidences. There are no accidents. But there is destiny.
Hanna’s post extracted from FB (with comments):
